Motion Capture

Motion Capture

The animation above is my most recent project using motion captue. I don't have a motion capture suit or a capture space so I relied on Mixamo for the models and the animations. I decided to do this project because it has been a long time since I worked with motion capture data. For the most part, I wanted to brush up on my skills using motion capture data and working in MotionBuilder.

All of the blending was done in MotionBuilder and some of the cleanup as well. Most of the cleanup was done in Maya. I also wanted to practice a little with camera animation as I haven't really done a lot of that in the past. Working with prerecorded motion capture animation without any control of it was definetly a challenge. A lot of the things that I wanted to have in this scene were not available in the Mixamo library so I had to improvise a lot and combine different parts of several animations to get one thing I wanted. This project was a lot of fun and made me like working with motion capture a lot more.

This animation was the first animation that was done using motion capture. This project was started around February of 2020. It was initially started as a group project where three students worked together to create a one minute animation using a motion capture suit in a capture space. Myself and two other students divided the capturing, two students used the capture space with the motion capture suit while the third student, myself,  used the Xsens suit.

Due to the pandemic, each student in the group was given the animations and was then to create their own version of the animation. My version pushed the humor a little more that the other two versions. I used Motive to clean up some of the animations captured in the capture space. The bulk of the blending and cleaning was done in MotionBuilder. I did use Maya for a couple shots, specifically for the soldier sliding under the nets and jumping over the wall.

This animation was done a couple months into the pandemic in a motion capture class, the same class that the animation above this was done in. Due to the pandemic and classes being 100% remote, we had to do this project using Mixamo animations. For this assignment we had to create a story or scene that was about a minute long. The goal of this assignment was to demonstrate an understanding of MotionBuilder and how to combine and blend animations within the program. The animations were blended together using the story editor. All of the minor adjustments to the rigs were done using animation layers.
